7 Things to do in Bali, Indonesia

Bali is an amazing place and we were lucky enough to spend 10 nights on this tropical island paradise in 2007. This is one destination that we definitely plan on returning to on our round-the-world trip for many reasons, particularly because of its relaxed atmosphere and the lovely nature of the locals.
Based on our past experience, here are 7 of the best things to experience whilst in Bali. There are plenty more, but if you plan on visiting Bali soon this list will get you started.

1. Hire a driver

Jatiluwih Rice Terraces
Jatiluwih Rice Terraces - best accessed with your own personal driver.
For $50 USD, you can hire a knowledgeable driver and car in Bali for an entire day. This is an extremely cheap and efficient way to see the various sites that the island has to offer (and riding around in a clean, air-conditioned vehicle is quite nice as well!). It’s much cheaper than an organized tour and the best part is that you are flexible to go and see whatever you want!
Some of the places we recommend you check out with a driver include:
  • Art in Ubud.
  • Mount Batur.
  • Mother Temple of Besakih.
  • Jatiluwih Rice Terrace.
  • Tanah Lot Temple.
Our recommendation: There are plenty of transport touts on the side of the road who will offer to take you around Bali, but we highly recommend doing your research and organizing a driver beforehand. Check out the tours offered by Dewa Parwita at Bali Explore Tours.

2. Elephant Safari Park

Elephant Ride in Bali
Elephant Ride in Bali
The Elephant Safari Park & Lodge in Taro is acclaimed as the world’s best elephant park and is a must for any visitor to Bali.
The park is a fantastic day trip away from the hustle and bustle of Kuta where you can get up close with these majestic creatures. Not only can you ride the elephants through the cool jungles of Taro (an experience that you’ll never forget!), you can also hand feed the elephants, touch them, take photos with them and enjoy the educational elephant shows.
There is also a fantastic museum at the park, a buffet restaurant overlooking the lake and a luxury safari style lodge if you want to extend your time there.
Our recommendation: Book online and save up to 15% off. For $73 per person, you can get the full day Elephant Safari Park/Ride Tour, lunch and hotel transfers.

3. Waterbom Park

Waterslides at Waterbom Park
Waterslides at Waterbom Park
What better way to cool off from the Bali heat than hitting the waterslides at Waterbom Park? Conveniently located in Kuta across from the Discovery Shopping Mall is this excellent water park suitable for all ages.
For the adults, Waterbom offers massages, spa treatments and a swim-up bar, which many people seem to just sit by all day. But the real fun of Waterbom Park is in the many adventure slides they have on offer as well as the tranquil Lazy River.
Our recommendation: Get there early if you want to rent a private Gazebo, and spend plenty of time on the Lazy River.

4. Bali shopping

Shopping in Bali
Shopping in Bali
Regardless of your reasons for coming to Bali, you’re going to end up shopping – you just can’t escape it. In fact, many tourists (including ourselves) come to Bali with empty suitcases just to fill them up for the return trip home.
From the designer brand names to art and local handicrafts, no matter what you’re looking for you will be able to find it in this shopper’s paradise.
Our recommendation: If bargaining is not your thing, visit Jenny Shop opposite Waterbom Park. She is one of the friendliest people we’ve met on our travels and the slogan of her shop is simple – “No bullshit and set price”.

5. Experience the nightlife

Drag Queen Show at QBar
Drag Queen Show at QBar
There is something to cater for everyone’s tastes in nightlife from restaurants with live music to bars and nightclubs such as Huu-Bar, Double Six and The Bounty. Considering how cheap the beer is in Bali (you can’t go past the local Bintang!), there’s no reason not to enjoy at least one night out on the town while you’re here. The nightlife in Bali doesn’t start to get busy until late but once it does, it really is quite the experience!
Our recommendation: Beware of people offering you illegal drugs outside popular nightspots. We were offered both ecstasy and marijuana near the beaches of Kuta – apparently these people are often police informants trying to catch out naïve tourists. Unless you want to try to make the international news, ignore their offers!

6. Spend time on the beaches

Picturesque Bali Beach
Picturesque Bali Beach
The prime tourist destinations in Bali – Kuta, Legian and Seminyak – are all built on the beach and with world-class diving and surfing, it’s a fantastic way to spend some time here. Stay at these beaches for any period of time and you’ll quickly be approached by the beach hawkers offering massages, manicures/pedicures, food/drinks or whatever products they sell for a living. If you want any of these products or services, be sure to bargain and bargain hard!
For the adventurers who aren’t content on relaxing on the white sandy beaches, the Bali Water Sport Center in Tanjung Benoa (near Nusa Dua) is a fantastic place to visit. They offer a variety of activities including parasailing, snorkeling, jet skiing, water skiing, banana boat rides and more.
Our recommendation: If you want to relax, stick to the hotel pool. It is very easy to get overwhelmed by the beach hawkers in Bali.

7. Enjoy the food

The Flaming Kintamani Volcano Pizza at Papa's Cafe
The Flaming Kintamani Volcano Pizza at Papa's Cafe
Dining in Bali is definitely a highlight, from traditional Balinese cuisine to the countless other options you have to choose from. There are flashy beachside restaurants but plenty of budget eats where we have enjoyed some of the best food we’ve ever tasted. There are also some quite unique food experiences to be had, such as the pictured Volcano Pizza from Papa’s Cafe. They actually light it on fire before you eat it!

Salary 19 citizens in Libya Employer Arrested

Libya increasingly erratic. Opposition forces stormed into Tripoli, the Libyan capital which previously controlled the defense forces Moammar Gaddafi. Unfortunately 19 Indonesian citizens left behind, even though the government has already evacuated hundreds of citizens of Indonesia.

Having traced 19 citizens turned out it was an illegal immigrant victims of human trade. Most of them chose to stay in the middle of the conflict because of their salaries withheld by employers.

Indonesian Ambassador to Tunisia, Muhammad Ibn Said, confirmed that the embassy has conducted an intense communication with the workers left behind. Said claimed the workers were remnants of hundreds of citizens who have been evacuated out of Libya.

"They are remnants, scattered yet known to exist before," said Said to VIVAnews, Tuesday, August 23, 2011.

Said claimed to get their names from the other maids who have been evacuated. To 19 people have been getting out of Libya, but they chose to stay because it has not been paid and lured big bonus after Eid.

"Most employers withheld their salaries, so they want to stay to take care of children, parents, or cooking. I've told them 'money could be sought after, life was just one' but they still choose to stay," said Said.

"Some others are working to a generous employer, they do not want to lose the opportunity if returned to Indonesia," she added.

Said explained that the 19 workers were sent to Libya illegally. They are mostly registered to work in Egypt, Dubai or Jordan, but by the dealer and then sent to Tripoli. "I say this as human trafficking, because they were moved illegally. In addition, Libya is not among the destinations of Indonesian workers," said Said.

The maids are working in a variety of elite settlements in Tripoli. Said claimed to continue to communicate with the maids, some afraid to tell because in the area near where he lived a shootout.

"They hear stories of battle and gunfire here and there. I urge to not go out and do not take steps itself. I call them to always be alert and do not leave the house, and away from the upheaval," said Said.

 A Mother is.....

A Mother is…selfless in every way.
A Mother is someone who lets you cry in her arms after your boyfriend dumps you and tells you that you don’t need a boy to be fabulous. You already are.
A Mother is someone who gets up early to make your lunch for school and sneaks in a written note to say she loves you.
A Mother is someone who can rock an 80’s perm like nobody’s business.

She can also style a mean side pony when she has to.

A Mother is someone who cuts the crusts off your bread even though she doesn’t have time to butter her own.
A Mother is someone who communicates well. When she calls you by your first, middle, and last name you know you are in deep trouble.
A Mother is also someone who is a master of non-verbal communication. With just one look, you know she knows what you did…and that’s never good.
A Mother is someone who writes Operation Beautiful notes and leaves them wherever she travels.
A Mother is someone who defies the aging process because she radiates love and beauty.
A Mother is someone who supports your love of singing, tutus, furry pets, and rollerskates.

A Mother is someone with patience. She understands that your terrible twos and troublesome teenage years will pass. And when they do, she misses them.
A Mother is someone who teaches you the power of the written word.
A Mother is someone who is awake at night worrying when you are going through a tough time. Whether you are a toddler with a bad cold, a 16 year old girl with a broken heart, or a 25 year old woman struggling with a career decision. She’s used to not getting much sleep.
A Mother is someone who cries when she reads your cards.

A Mother is someone who misses you when you are not around. She reads your blog, calls you, and emails you. She even learns how to use Twitter and Skype just so she can be more connected. (still working on the texting, but we’ll get there!)
A Mother is someone who takes a picture of a recipe that she made because she knows you will be proud.
A Mother is someone who gives you the last piece of cake and exclaims that she ‘isn’t hungry’ after all.
A Daughter is someone who thinks her Mom deserves to eat more cake.

Thankfully, Mother’s are forgiving because this recipe I planned to share with you yesterday did not taste good!
I have a feeling that if I could be with my mom today, she would love this cake anyways.
Happy Mother’s Day to all the Mothers who make this world go round.

MICHAEL LEARNS TO ROCK "Paint My Love"

From my youngest years
till this moment here
I've never seen
such a lovely queen

From the skies above
to the deepest love
I've never felt
crazy like this before

[Chorus:]
Paint my love
you should paint my love
it's the picture of a thousand sunsets
it's the freedom of a thousand doves
Baby you should paint my love

Been around the world
then I met you girl
It's like comming home
to a place I've known

[Chorus:]
Paint my love
you should paint my love
it's the picture of a thousand sunsets
it's the freedom of a thousand doves
Baby you should paint my love

Since you came into my life
the days before all fade to black and white
Since you came into my life
Everything has changed

[Chorus:]
Paint my love
you should paint my love
it's the picture of a thousand sunsets
it's the freedom of a thousand doves
Baby you should paint my love

[Chorus:]
Paint my love
you should paint my love
it's the picture of a thousand sunsets
it's the freedom of a thousand doves
Baby you should paint my love

  • He who lives without discipline dies without honor. (Icelandic Proverb)
  • Nothing of importance is ever achieved without discipline. I feel myself sometimes not wholly in sympathy with some modern educational theorists, because I think that they underestimate the part that discipline plays. • A colt is worth little if it does not break its halter. (Proverb)
  • The only discipline that lasts is self-discipline. (Bum Phillips)

  • People create their own success by learning what they need to learn and then by practcing it until they become proficient at it. (Brian Tracy)
  • If you do not conquer self, you will be conquered by self. (Napoleon Hill)
  • No man or woman has achieved an effective personality who is not self-disciplined. Such discipline must not be an end in itself, but must be directed to the development of resolute Christian character. (John S. Bonnell)

  • The secret of success is constancy of purpose. (Benjamin Disraeli)

  • It is not enough to fight. It is the spirit which we bring to the fight that decides the issue. It is morale that wins the victory. (General George Marshall)

  • Our cause, then, must be intrusted to, and conducted by, its own undoubted friends ? those whose hands are free, whose hearts are in the work ? who do care for the result. Two years ago the Republicans of the nation mustered over thirteen hundred thousand strong. We did this under the single impulse of resistance to a common danger, with every external circumstance against us. Of strange, discordant, and even, hostile elements, we gathered from the four winds, and formed and fought the battle through, under the constant hot fire of a disciplined, proud, and pampered enemy. Did we brave all then to falter now? ? now when that same enemy is wavering, dissevered, and belligerent? The result is not doubtful. We shall not fail ? if we stand firm, we shall not fail. Wise councils may accelerate or mistakes delay it, but, sooner or later, the victory is sure to come. (Abraham Lincoln)
  • What excites and interests the looker-on at life, what the romances and the statues celebrate, and the grim civic monuments remind us of, is the everlasting battle of the powers of light with those of darkness; with heroism reduced to its bare chance, yet ever and anon snatching victory from the jaws of death. (William James)
  • He had by now divested himself of schoolboy attitudes. He was unburdened by the desire to be a martyr or a hero. Any thoughts in that direction, Belgica effectively had quashed. Heroism in the corrupt sense of the age almost by definition, meant wanton self-sacrifice and bungling. For neither had he any taste. He wanted rational attainment; victory, but not at any price. No point upon the globe was worth the cost of a single life. (Roland Huntford)
  • The courses of the Victory were absorbed into the main, then her topsails went, and then her top-gallants. She was now no more than a dead fly?s wing on a sheet of spider?s web; and even this fragment diminished. Anne could hardly bear to see the end, and yet she resolved not to flinch. The admiral?s flag sank behind the watery line, and in a minute the very trunk of the last main-mast stole away. The Victory was gone. (Thomas Hardy)
  • You ask, What is our policy? I will say; It is to wage war, by sea, land and air, with all our might and with all the strength that God can give us: to wage war against a monstrous tyranny, never surpassed in the dark lamentable catalogue of human crime. That is our policy. You ask, What is our aim? I can answer with one word: Victory ? victory at all costs, victory in spite of all terror, victory, however long and hard the road may be; for without victory there is no survival. (Winston Churchill)

  • Nothing is as difficulty as to achieve results in this world if one is filled full of great tolerances and the milk of human kindness. The person who achieves must generally be a one-idea individual, concentrated entirely on that one idea, and ruthless in his aspect toward other men and other ideas. (Corinne Roosevelt Robinson)
  • All of us perform better and more willingly when we know why we’re doing what we have been told or asked to do. (Zig Ziglar)
  • The truth of the matter is that there’s nothing you can’t accomplish if: (1) You clearly decide what it is that you’re absolutely committed to achieving, (2) You’re willing to take massive action, (3) You notice what’s working or not, and (4) You continue to change your approach until you achieve what you want, using whatever life gives you along the way.
